Qualcomm introduces its successor to the Snapdragon 765G. Among other things, the new Snapdragon 780G 5G gets a new integrated 5G modem, with Qualcomm no longer advertising mmWave-5G support. The chip is made on Samsung’s 5nm node.
The Snapdragon 780G has a Kryo 670 CPU with Cortex-A78 core at 2.4GHz, three A78 cores at 2.2GHz and four more energy-efficient Cortex-A55 cores at 1.9GHz. According to Qualcomm, the CPU performs up to 40 percent better than its predecessor. The chip also has an Adreno 642 GPU, which, according to Qualcomm, is up to 50 percent faster than the GPU from its predecessor.
The new soc gets an integrated X53 modem with 5G support. It is striking, however, that Qualcomm does not mention support for mmWave-5G. The previous Snapdragon 765G soc with X52 modem does support this. The Snapdragon 780G therefore only seems to offer sub-6GHz 5G, with dualsim-5G also being supported. Qualcomm also mentions support for Wi-Fi 6 and 6E with the company’s FastConnect 6900 system. Bluetooth 5.2 is also supported.
Qualcomm further claims that the new soc performs better in AI workloads. The company equips the chip with a sixth-generation Qualcomm AI Engine with Hexagon 770 processor. The chipmaker states that the chip delivers up to 12 TOPS of AI computing power, compared to 5.5 TOPS with the Snapdragon 765G.
The Snapdragon 780G also gets a new Spectra 570 – image signal processor . The Snapdragon chip has three ISPs, just like the higher positioned Snapdragon 888. This allows photos to be taken simultaneously with three camera sensors. The chip supports three 25-megapixel cameras, a dual-camera setup with 64- and 20-megapixel sensor, or a single 84-megapixel camera.
The new soc is further made on a 5nm process from Samsung. The current Snapdragon 765 chips are made on a 7nm node from that company. Qualcomm writes that the first smartphones with Snapdragon 780G chip will hit the market in the second quarter of this year. No concrete smartphones with this soc have yet been announced.
