The smell of a new car, so appreciated by some, could soon disappear

For many car owners, nothing compares to the smell inside new cars. There is even a perfume in the UK called Eau De New Car. However, this smell could disappear as legislation around the world changes.

There are people who do not like the smell, and others cause allergic reactions, but also eye irritation or dizziness. “Eau De New Car” is produced by eight substances – acetaldehyde, acrolein, benzene, ethylbenzene, formaldehyde, styrene, toluene and xylene – called volatile organic compounds.

The smell of the new car is not appreciated in Asia

In South Korea, nearly half of the 800 people surveyed by the government showed symptoms of volatile organic compounds used in car construction. Seoul has introduced stricter rules on the use of these substances in the automotive industry. Similar measures have been taken in China, Japan and Russia.

Ford has already found a way, for which it has applied for a patent, to eliminate the specific smell of the new car.

Cars produced in South Korea will no longer smell like a new car, but sometimes they come with unbearable odors. Hyundai has a problem with its Palisade SUV model : it doesn’t know why the car smells bad inside. Customers described the unpleasant smell as a combination of rotten vegetables and dirty socks.
