US, Europe and SpaceX launch satellite to monitor sea level rise

Satellites can perform many missions around our planet. Some are intended for monitoring the evolution of our climate. This is the case with the Sentinel 6 Michael Freilich satellite.

Scientists today have extremely sophisticated means of understanding the world around us, in the infinitely small as well as in the infinitely large. And they are no longer confined to the mainland. The satellites allow for example to get high. Which is very practical for monitoring our climate in particular. This will be the main objective of the Sentinel 6 Michael Freilich satellite .

Experts will soon have a new, very advanced tool to study the rise in sea levels in this great climate change that is currently at work. The NASA and ESA, US and European space agencies, respectively, collaborated with SpaceX to launch the Satellite Sentinel 6 Michael Freilich. It was designed to monitor ocean and sea levels around the world, thus continuing 28-year continuous monitoring at an extremely high level of detail – on the order of a centimeter for more than 90% of oceans -.

This satellite could also improve meteorological predictions and help vessels navigate by detecting currents very precisely. The name of the satellite, meanwhile, comes from the former director of the Earth Sciences division of NASA, an expert in the field.

The Sentinel 6 Michael Freilich will even have a companion in the relatively near future. A twin satellite, Sentinel 6B, will normally be launched in 2025. This duo will help maintain climate tracking for “at least” an additional decade, according to NASA. However, it will take about a year before the first Sentinel 6 satellite takes over from its predecessor, Jason-3.

Still, the timing seems ideal. The new US administration should fully recognize the importance of climate science . Such a technologically advanced satellite should help this administration to make better political decisions, or at least more informed decisions on the subject.
