Study: Dreams are a continuation of reality

Where do dreams come from? This is a question that people have been looking for an answer for a very long time.

In ancient civilizations, dreams were considered to have a religious or supernatural origin, but in modern society, we still try to analyze dreams from a reality perspective, looking for meaningful connections between dreams and real life experiences.

Researchers have repeatedly provided strong support for what sleep scientists call the “dream continuation hypothesis”: most dreams are a continuation of what happens in our daily lives. It turns out that everyday life has a big impact on dreams (anxiety in life, for example, leads to negative dreams and vice versa), ”explained the researchers.

These psychological theories originated in the time of Sigmund Freud, who discussed the hidden meaning of dreams, which could be revealed in the context of human real life. Today, therapists try to help their patients interpret their dreams by looking for clues, symbols, and structures that may be relevant to the patient’s daily life.

One of the most recognized systems of dream interpretation is the so-called Hall and van de Castell system, in which dreams are coded according to the images that appear in them, their relationships and other concepts. True, there is one problem with this system, namely, to manually identify the necessary elements in dreams may take a long and slow process. That’s why scientists are now looking for algorithmic ways to make this task automatic.

In a new study published in the scientific journal Royal Society Open Science , a team of researchers developed new ways to achieve this. In one of them, researchers analyzed 24 thousand dreams from the gigantic public database DreamBank .

“We created a tool that automatically evaluates dreams using the widely used Hall and van de Castel dream analysis method,” the researchers said.

The research team’s dream processing tool simplifies Hall and van de Castel’s system by analyzing dream messages and focusing on images, their relationships and emotions in them.

“These three dimensions are considered to be the most important in the interpretation of dreams. They are defined as the backbone of the dream scenario: what characters were in the dream, what actions they performed and what emotions arose, ”the researchers explained.

When the researchers compared the result obtained by the automatic system with the manual notes of dream experts about the same dream reports, the results coincided in three quarters of the cases. While this is not an ideal outcome, it is promising.

The researchers also found evidence to support the continuation hypothesis, namely that dreams are a continuation of our daily lives.
